Different Types of Termites in Malaysia: Which One Is in Your Home?
Not all termites are the same. In Malaysia’s tropical, high-humidity environment, several termite species thrive, but their nesting habits, food preferences, and damage patterns differ significantly. Knowing which type of termite is infesting your home is crucial for selecting the right treatment and eradication method.
While there are over 170 termite species recorded in Malaysia, the vast majority of property damage is caused by three main groups: Subterranean termites, Drywood termites, and Dampwood termites.
The 3 Main Types of Termites in Malaysia
1. Subterranean Termites (Coptotermes spp.) — The Most Dangerous
Responsible for over 85%–90% of structural termite damage in Malaysia, subterranean termites build their central nests underground in the soil. They require constant moisture and build distinctive brown mud shelter tubes to travel into houses, attacking door frames, parquet flooring, built-in cabinets, and roof trusses.
2. Drywood Termites (Cryptotermes spp.)
Unlike subterranean termites, drywood termites do not need soil contact or high moisture levels. They live directly inside dry wooden structures such as solid wood doors, wooden furniture, roof rafters, and antique wooden items. Instead of building mud tubes, they push out tiny, sand-like fecal pellets (frass) through small kick-out holes.
3. Dampwood Termites
Dampwood termites infest wood with extremely high moisture content and decay. They are rarely found inside modern landed properties unless there is persistent, heavy water leakage, decaying outdoor garden timber, or rotting tree stumps close to the building foundation.
